workworkwork

Well, the other week i got an added set of responsibilities. I work for a local web hosting company. While most work (sales, billing, tech support, remote administration of servers) is done from our canton office, we also utilize two data centers. gnax down in Atlanta, (we rent servers there, about 120, give or take) and a newer one, XO Communications in Southfield. In this one we actually rent out cage space, power, and bandwidth. We then build servers in the office and bring them down. Since we are colocating, hardware modifications, upgrades, and repairs are our responsibility. Now, its really sucks to stay in a data center cage all day, so we don't go there unless we have to. However, atleast one person on every shift (24/7) has to have security access to our servers at the XO facility. I recently got asked if i would be willing to be the person to head down on my shift should the need arise. Of course i agreed. I had to sign this crazy contact and then i got this nifty ADT proximity security card. Its kinda scary though, if i keep the door open for more than 15 seconds at a time, the fuzz busts down the wall. It makes me feel kinda needed and important to be the one to go down there when things explode. Hopefully a raise will soon follow. (probably at my next performance review)
